What does this mean, exactly? Does it mean you believe you have what it takes to do whatever it is you are trying to accomplish? Do you believe you have self-confidence? Is it that you trust yourself to make the right decisions in your life? Does it mean you think you are “good enough”?
What is it about yourself that you believe in?
I guess it means different things to different people. It’s pretty vague, but to me, it seems to suggest that I am sufficient, I am my own authority, or I have enough confidence in myself to accomplish some endpoint.
To be honest, I don’t really care to “believe in myself.” My self has let me down more times than I can count. And, frankly, in times past when I did believe more in myself, I made more mistakes, did more bad things, and thought too highly of myself.
Like almost all affirmations, this one is focused on one’s own self. That’s the problem with affirmations. It does not matter to me whether they “work” or not. Affirmations make us self-focused and self-absorbed because they keep us thinking about ourselves. It’s a doom loop.
Instead of believing in myself, I’d rather have confidence in believing in Somebody else, One who is on a whole ‘nuther level:
Don’t let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God, believe also in Me.
Jesus Christ to His disciples – John 14:1
Let’s be real: If you believe in yourself the way most people use this affirmation, you haven’t set the bar very high. Because you will let yourself down at some point, and you will fail at times, then you’ll be tempted to doubt yourself while trying to convince yourself to believe in yourself.
it just gets ugly at that point.
I’d rather believe in Someone who will never let me down, the only One who I can have full and complete confidence in at all times, no matter what happens in my life.
I believe in the Creator God. I believe in His only begotten Son who gave His life for all of us while we were yet sinners.
Can anyone believe in anything better?
