That’s right, ladies and gentlemen. You read that right. It’s not a typo on my part.
I saw the above affirmation in an Etsy shop as part of an affirmation package (cards I think), and I instantly knew I had to include this little gem in my affirmation buzzkill blog.
There are nearly a thousand items for sale on Etsy (at the date of this blog post) using “affirmation career path” as the keyword search phrase. There is definitely demand for affirmations to help us find, or be settled on, our career choice.
I can only hope the author of this exact affirmation wasn’t an English teacher!
I certainly understand why people think they need to affirm their career or job choice. Most working age adults work for a living, and we spend the majority of our waking hours working our jobs. We want to get this right!
But many of us aren’t sure if we made the right choice, or, after a long career doing a certain job, we wished we had made a different choice.
Justifying our career choice
The first and most unsettling problem some of us have with our career choice is deciding on whether we made the right choice. I think for many people, the sunk cost fallacy kicks in. We have so much time, money, and effort invested in something, we find it nearly impossible to chuck the whole thing out the window, because it would make us feel like we totally wasted all our resources on a bad choice.
So we do all kinds of mental gymnastics, we suck it up, hunker down, and try to convince ourselves we made the right choice.
Of course, if you’re in school, you can always change majors before you get dug in too deep. But even if you’ve worked in a job for decades, you can make a change even now. We live in a world of opportunity, after all.
God gives much better advice than I ever could, so if you are struggling with a career choice or what your “path” is in any other area of life, listen to this:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will direct your paths.
King Solomon – Proverbs 3:5-6
By the way, one career option could be as a proofreader so people wouldn’t make the mistake of printing cards to assure you that you made the right “carrer” move. ๐
