Back about a few minutes ago in the pre-covid era when there was actual freedom in Australia (2016), home-grown SIA came out with a song called Unstoppable. The song was so huge that most front page search engine results even today point to various YouTube videos, where it’s racked up hundreds of millions of views.
The song is an anthem for empowered females, where you can find lyrical gems in the chorus where SIA sings about being:
Unstoppable
A Porsche with no brakes (huh)
Invincible
Powerful
So confident
… not just confident, but so confident.
Ok, I get it, but that Porsche with no brakes is very stoppable, and it will come to a stop sooner or later, probably sooner, as soon as it hits a brick wall, a big tree on the roadside, the tanker truck in front of it, or a concrete support column on an interstate overpass.
Unstoppable people are notorious for crashing and burning.
To put it another way, everything in the universe is stoppable. Except for God.
I can hear you saying, “Come on, the song’s not literal. It’s more of an attitude than anything else. It’s about drive and determination and confidence. I might fall but I’ll get right back up!”
To which I would say… “Cool! Drive and determination and confidence are good things.”
But then…
You do not know what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.”
James 4:14-15
We tend to forget that all of our plans, all of our goals, and all the things we need to be unstoppable to achieve them, all of it really depends on “If the Lord wills.” If He does, go in confidence in Him, remembering that the graveyards are full of people who also thought they were unstoppable.
Confidence can be a good thing, but if that confidence is placed squarely on your own resolve, your abilities, youth, health, means, drive, motivation, determination, or anything or anyone else, that Porsche will flame out in a spectacularly fiery crash and you’ll find out how vulnerable you were all along.
If God is for us, as the Apostle Paul asked rhetorically, who can be against us? If you truly want to be UNSTOPPABLE in all the right ways, hold high the banner of God’s mighty army against whom the gates of hell will not prevail and take the gospel message with you every day.
